The word ‘Rabbi’ means ‘teacher’ or ‘master.’ A Rabbi is the leader of a Jewish community and someone who is qualified to teach Jewish laws. Rabbi’s are often in charge of a single synagogue or community depending on the size of the congregation. In Orthodox communities, only men are permitted to become rabbis. In Reform or Liberal Jewish communities both men and women are able to become rabbis. There are many different reasons why someone might choose to become a rabbi.
