Reflecting on how we support teachers after our winter webinar

The Welsh Jewish Cultural Centre team hosted an event earlier this year to examine how we can support the curriculum requirements for Wales as we build our programming for the centre - and the findings from that event are feeding our agenda for education moving forward.

We ran a webinar on 8 February on the subject of Teaching Welsh Jewish History. The event reflected on the challenges and opportunities in the curriculum in Wales. We invited primary and secondary school teachers to find out more about the plans to transfer Merthyr Tydfil synagogue into a cultural centre telling the stories of Jewish heritage in Wales.

We wanted to find out what is needed for us to support school teachers in Wales in educating their students about Welsh Jewish history. Eight teachers from across the country joined us at the online event, from a variety of backgrounds and school settings. They were largely responsible for teaching humanities subjects such as RS and History.

Emily Smith from the Holocaust Education Trust, one of our project team hosting the event, said: " It was a fruitful conversation where we heard about the challenges facing Welsh schools and the gaps in teaching about Judaism, local history and Welsh Jewish history. We have kept in touch with the teachers and are facilitating ongoing conversations - many also attended our community Open Day. This has fed into our agenda for the Education working group, facilitated by Jennifer and I."
