The Foundation for Jewish Heritage is delighted to have been invited to be one of the very first organisations chosen to be a part of the ‘Pitch Up: Community Voices’ display in the new entrance/café area of the Jewish Museum London (JML).
JML has just reopened after a 15 month closure and, as part of this important moment, it selected six community-based organisations to present their work via East End inspired market stalls.
The purpose of the displays is to focus on preserving Jewish heritage and the items chosen had to reflect themes around identity, memory and place.
The Foundation’s stall presents images of Merthyr Tydfil synagogue in Wales which the Foundation purchased in order to transform it into a Welsh Jewish Heritage Centre.
Accompanying the images is a text in the form of an interview with Foundation Chief Executive Michael Mail discussing the display’s themes.
The interview ends with Michael being offered the opportunity to ask the viewer a question and he chose – What do you see as the purpose of preserving historic synagogues in places where there are no longer Jewish communities?
