Celebrating Hanukah (Audio)

Hanukah is the Festival of Lights which is celebrated each year during the Hebrew month of Kislev, usually around November or December. Hanukah remembers the story of the Maccabees. There was an evil king who ruled in Jerusalem who wanted everyone to pray to many different Gods. However, the Jewish people only believed in one God. The Maccabees fought back against the king. When the Maccabees had won, they tried to relight the temple’s sacred Menorah. The Menorah was a seven branched candelabra which was meant to have its lights always burning to symbolise the light of God. When the Maccabees tried to light the Menorah there was only enough oil to last for 1 day. However, a miracle happened and the small jar of oil lasted for 8 days and 8 nights. The celebration of Hanukah today remembers this miracle of the oil.
